East Mill Bakery

Today we took a bittersweet last venture to East Mill Bakery. It was an excellent end to our ice cream extravaganza. We hope you enjoyed joining us on this journey.

Let's delve into the atmosphere and service. We were greeted by beautiful floral arrangements in old fashioned milk jugs to pay homage to the milk house. (its previous title, go kine!!!) Then as soon as we stepped in our noses were filled with a pleasant aroma. The interior was relaxing and cute. We thought the complimentary lemon and strawberry water was a nice touch.

Now onto the part that you've all been waiting for, the ice cream! We each only sampled one flavor today, and they are *drum roll* located in the upper right corner... PECAN TOFFEE CARAMEL STUFF! And second, but by no means less important... COOKIES AND CREAM! (there were no given names) All of the ice cream seemed to be homemade.

Pecan toffee caramel stuff: This flavor was a delightful blend of caramel pecan and toffee flavors, evenly distributed. In addition to the ice cream, the caramel also tasted homemade. "I don't really like pecans, but it worked."- Amy

Cookies and cream: East Mill's cookies and cream was an excellent rendition of an old classic.  "It had an excellent balance between icy and creamy." -Joey

While we thoroughly enjoyed our ice cream visit, there a few things we have to mention. Their spoons could have been of higher grade material, and more sturdy. One thing we also found strange was the fact that their ice creams were not titled.

To close this last post, we would like to thank each individual fan, but as there are far too many of you, we will just thank you all as one unit. So thank you.

Sending our love for ice cream,

Your local ice cream experts

Sweet Memories Ice Cream Review

We will start this review by covering the service and atmosphere. We both agreed that the atmosphere of Sweet Memories was the best of any place we have been to. It was very whimsical and extremely well suited for tourists. It seemed old fashioned and very relaxed. There was only one man working there but he did a very good job, and very honest about his lack of knowledge concerning the Blue Moon ice cream flavor.

We tried two kinds of ice cream each.

Malt Amor'
It was great if you like Malted Milk Balls.

Cookies & Cream
Just your typical Cookies & Cream, nothing to see here.

Blue Moon
Subtle Almond taste, the more it rolls around atop your tongue the stronger the almond taste. "It was simply ice cream, that was quite aesthetically pleasing." ~ Amy

Black Raspberry Truffle.
The raspberry flavor was quite delicious and it mixed well with the small chocolate truffles inside. "I was hoping for a delicious fruity flavor as I walked to Sweet Memories and that's just what I got with Black Raspberry Truffle!!" ~Joey

Beechers Ice Cream

Today we went to a popular destination for Dubuque ice cream goers. Beechers Ice cream, it is a little shop with no where to sit but it is conveniently located on the side of an alley with a wall to sit on.

Service:
The one lady who was currently working there was very nice and seemed happy to serve us. She gave reasonable amount of ice cream per taste. (ICPT) The menu was easy to decipher without any hidden meanings.

Atmosphere:
Its a cozy little ice cream shop. The color scheme was white and blue for the most part. They did well to bring your attention to their display of ice cream as that is their main attraction. However there was a support pole in front of the ice cream display that made it harder to get from one side of the ice cream selection to the other.

Ice Cream:

Razzle Dazzle
This was a good option, however the raspberry flavoring could be inconsistent. There were nice little chocolates with raspberry flavoring inside. A good selection but it could possibly improve with real raspberries in it. "It didn't really dazzle me but was tasty none the less." -Joey

Blueberry
"It was simple, smooth, and satisfying" -Amy It was pretty ordinary, there wasn't anything too spectacular about it. The flavor of blueberry was definitely there but there wasn't any blueberry chunks. The color was pleasing to the eye.

Mint Oreo
The taste of the oreo was outmatched by the strong flavor of mint. it was a very odd pigment, "The blue color reminds me of toothpaste" -Amy

If you have never been to Beechers we encourage you to give it a try!

Jitterz Ice Cream Review

Today we reviewed ice cream at Jitterz in downtown Dubuque. We decided to try only 2 types instead of 3 this time. We will start the review with overall service.

They were very generous with their sample amounts and had a good joking attitude the whole time they were serving us. Their metal sample spoons were very durable and perfect for optimal ice cream taste. The atmosphere was that of a regular cafe with nice soothing colors and pictures on the walls. They did a good job of keeping the area clean and keeping up with the dishes left by costumers. There were fun things to do that tied in with the other downtown stores and board games to play with friends. Now on to the actual ice cream part!

These are in no particular order.

Big Muddy:
Great for chocolate lovers but for an average chocolate supporter it could be a bit too much for your palate.  It was dark chocolate ice cream with brownies and chocolate syrup. This was our first sample but neither of us decided to order this option.

Caramel Collision:
It did not disappoint on the caramel, and held true to its name. "It was truly a collision of ice cream and caramel" It melted too fast, but that may have been due to the fact that we were outdoors. It had a good quantity of chocolate covered caramel pieces inside to add extra flavor.

Elephant Tracks:
This was a very nice option on the ice cream menu. "It had a perfect fusion of ice cream, peanut butter cups and chocolate syrup." Confusing name, not sure where the elephants where going but their tracks led nowhere.

Also as a note to Jitterz,
Please consider investing in more sturdy ice cream spoons. As the ones we used bent often when we tried to get a spoonful of ice cream.

Joey and Amy

Ice Cream Review #1

Betty Jane's Candies & Ice cream
We ate our ice cream and then wrote down notes. We then broke it down and examined each aspect of the test.

Their service was quite good. The lady waiting upon us was very agreeable and was happy to let us try multiple flavors. She was also nice enough to give us shiny change when we paid which was very thoughtful of her and may have ensured me a job at a location I applied to. She was generous with the ice cream and didn't give us a small amount. It wasn't a huge amount either, she stuck to her training and gave very constant sized scoops of ice cream.
Another thing that Betty Jane's had going for them was an overall enjoyable atmosphere. The moment you walked through the doors your face was blasted with the delicious smells of many different candy and ice cream options. Their decorating was done exceptionally well, it had nice cute candy displays that were very orderly and made it easy to find things. And most importantly it was clean. The floor and walls were a very clean white without any smudges or marks on them.

Here are the three types of ice cream we tried and what we thought of each flavor. They are listed best to not so best.

1. Black Raspberry Fromage

2. Dulce de Leche

3. Gremlin

Black Raspberry Fromage
It was very fruity with a bold flavor. "Took me back to eating Trix as a child" (Amy English) "Miles of summer flavor" (Joey Ott)

Dulce de Leche
Dulce de leche had a strong flavor and texture relating to caramel. It had a hard name to pronounce, perhaps it would be number 1 if it was in English.

Gremlin
This option was good in small amounts. They would do well to not have so many pecans.
